- Free-standing units: Like traditional woodstoves, but so much cleaner and easier to use! Most models can vent up two or three feet off the top of the stove and then out horizontally through the wall. A few can go directly horizontal out the wall. You can also vent them up through the roof and may also utilize parts of an existing woodstove chimney system.
- Inserts: Designed for installation in an existing masonry fireplace. Comes with different sizes, colors and shapes of surrounds which blend them into the existing opening of your fireplace. Flexible vent runs through the chimney.
- Built-in fireplaces: Built-in look, without the necessity of a masonry chimney. Many brands now offer mantles or surrounds and mantles to complete the look, or you can design your own. Venting can be accomplished up through the roof, or up a short way and then out horizontally.
Important Considerations When Selecting a Fireplace
Heat Output and Room Size
When choosing a fireplace, it’s important to consider its heat output and your room size. You also need to determine if it will serve as a primary heat source or just for ambiance. The fireplace’s BTU rating indicates its heat output, with settings ranging from low to high. For smaller rooms or decorative use, a fireplace that turns down to 15,000 BTUs with up to 25,000 BTUs is sufficient and will prevent overheating. For large areas or whole homes, a minimum of 40,000 BTUs with powerful blowers is recommended to distribute heat effectively. Some fireplaces also offer ducts to redirect excess heat.
Installation Size and Clearance
Measure the area you want to place your fireplace. You’ll want to pay particular attention to the recommended “clearances from combustibles.” Also, be aware of where the venting must be located, as it cannot end too close to windows, doors, other exhausts or air intake areas. Mode of Operation
Most fireplaces can be operated with a simple on-off switch, which may be located directly on the unit, through an access panel, or on the wall. They can also be connected to a wall thermostat for consistent temperature regulation or to programmable thermostats that allow for different settings at various times and days. Additionally, most units are compatible with remote controls that vary from basic on-off functions to advanced features like digital temperature displays, thermostat capabilities, and controls for flame height and blower speeds. Some remotes even enable timed operation, turning the fireplace on for preset durations. blower speeds. A few will allow you to push a 30-minute button or a 60-minute button and the fireplace will come on for just that length of time.
